The pick of the summer season June's best veg: strawberries broad beans Fresh, in season and British.

British produce shines in June. The seasonal array is dazzling: tender young veggies, crisp outdoor lettuces, tangy gooseberries, earthy new potatoes and the sweetest succulent strawberries. Summer has arrived.

Seriously succulent strawberries:

Naturally high in vitamin C and bursting with sweetness, nothing sums up the British summertime quite like succulent strawberries. Whether dressed up in delicious desserts or just served simply with a dollop of cream, they’re the perfect sweet fix for a sunny day.

Slice them into your favourite cereal or yoghurt for a breakfast treat, or soften on the barbecue with marshmallows then dip in melted chocolate for a dreamy dessert. For that extra wow factor why not steep the strawberries in a little sugar with orange and passion fruit juice. A dash of port or a drizzle of balsamic vinegar will work wonders too.

The broad bean season starts in May, when the beans are small and the beans and pods can be eaten whole. The smaller the bean – the tastier they are. Eat them like mangetout when they’re young – after that pod them. Purists like to ‘double pod’ by slipping the beans out of their skins.

Blanch them for a minute, take the outer skins off and then cook for 3 – 4 minutes. A versatile vegetable that tastes great in risottos and pilaffs, soups and salads. Toss with bacon for a tasty warm salad or bake with eggs and cheese into a rich savoury tart.
